A Wonderful Review of the 2024 WAFI Dietary Fiber Summit

On October 10, 2024, the 2024 World Agricultural Technology Innovation Conference (WAFI) Dietary Fiber Summit was held at the Beijing Jinhai Lake International Convention and Exhibition Center. The conference was co-hosted by the MBA Education Center of China Agricultural University and the Chinese Society of Biotechnology, with Henan Tailijie Biotech Co.,Ltd. as a joint organizer. Experts, scholars, and business leaders from both China and abroad gathered to engage in a wonderful collision of ideas and wisdom.

The 2024 World Agricultural Technology Innovation Conference (WAFI) was themed "Climate Change and Agri-food System Transformation". Nearly 800 guests, including renowned scientists, university presidents, educators, entrepreneurs, and outstanding youth representatives from 76 countries and regions in the agricultural field, gathered in Pinggu, Beijing, to discuss the challenges and opportunities of agri-food system transformation in the context of climate change.

With people's growing focus on health and a deeper understanding of gut health in recent years, the dietary fiber industry is facing unprecedented opportunities and challenges. This summit was held to explore cutting-edge issues in dietary fiber, build consensus, and jointly plan for development.

The summit aimed to create a high-end dialogue platform to promote in-depth exchanges and cooperation among domestic and foreign experts, scholars, and business leaders. It was hoped that through the collision of ideas and the fusion of wisdom, new thinking would be inspired, and new ideas and solutions would be provided to contribute to the high-quality development of the dietary fiber industry.

Dr. Simon Heck, Director General of the International Potato Center (CIP), and Bibi Giyose, Senior Nutrition Officer for Policy and Programs in the Nutrition and Food Systems Division of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), were invited to attend the conference.

Professor Zhao Liping, a Rutgers University Chair Professor, Shanghai Jiao Tong University Distinguished Professor, Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology, and CIFAR, presented his recent research findings, "Gut Cornerstone Bacteria: New Targets for Nutritional Improvement of Human Health." This conference marked the first time Professor Zhao publicly presented this research, recently published in the leading international journal Cell.

Du Yuguang is a senior researcher at the State Key Laboratory of Biochemical Engineering, Institute of Process Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He is also the deputy director of the National Research Center for Biochemical Engineering (Beijing), deputy secretary-general of the Chinese Society for Bioengineering, chairman of the Glycobioengineering Committee, and a foreign academician of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences.

The entrepreneurs gave wonderful explanations on the development of the dietary fiber market, the application of dietary fiber in food industry production, and how companies can upgrade their products in the face of changes in public demand.

The dietary fiber applications brought by Tailijie's R&D team, including sugar-free high-fiber yogurt, high-fiber soft candy, and high-fiber reduced-sugar baked products, were highly praised by the delegates.

On October 12, the 2024 WAFI conference successfully concluded at the Beijing Jinhai Lake International Convention and Exhibition Center. Professor Li-Ping Zhao, a chair professor at Rutgers University, distinguished professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology, was awarded the conference's Science and Technology Innovation Award.

The 2024 WAFI conference showcased a series of remarkable agricultural technology breakthroughs. Artificial intelligence, as a new quality productive force, is reshaping the future of smart agriculture.
